01:58 : I'm sure she means well but nothing gets me more fired up than somebody reassuring me when I'm already sure. It gives me that "alone in a crowd" feeling and ensures I stop communicating. (Is that normal or mental illness??) 02:50 : Who could have guessed~ No consequences for Abby~ 04:58 : That's gotta be wild. I mean, I know that they know that they sent her down there, but imagine you've never heard outside contact ever. It'd be like receiving a message from aliens. 06:13 : As much as I hate Wells, I do like Jaha and this is a rough way to get the news. 07:04 : Alright, y'all gonna judge me. Octavia and Jasper are the only people who have earned a seat in the Cool Kids Club. She's out there casually gathering medical supplies in a hurricane. Even though I love Raven, she hasn't done anything particularly selfless or heroic. Badass, for sure, but she's no hero yet. 08:06 : A lot of people will hide behind claims like, "Studies show torture isn't effective.", to avoid taking an actual stance of the morality of it. Is it OK to apply pressure, of any kind, during questioning of a prisoner? Is there an actual line to be crossed? I often say, "If 'No' isn't an acceptable response, it's not a request!". Once we're questioning folks against their will, we might as well go whole hog. I don't believe violating folks is some murky gradient, that can be better or worse. Just own your villainy! 09:50 : I can appreciate the position Bellamy is in here. If he's going to take responsibility for the security of all these kids, he needs to do /something/. This might be the only answer he can think of, at this time. Octavia steadily gains points for trying to stop this. 11:29 : We're gonna call her Suspicia. 12:30 : "I'm here as an ally.", is always code for, "Please look anywhere but here!". 17:39 : "Well if he didn't hate us, he does now!". I think this is worth considering in many cases but not really this one. They speared Jasper and strung him up as bait. Even if taking over the forest or crossing the river could be considered some kind of crime (note : it was done to them, not by them), I'm not convinced peace was ever actually an option. 20:23 : Kane does appear legitimately remorseful here. Jaha telling his guy to put his weapon away is the kind of refreshing leadership that makes this a fantasy show QQ 20:40 : "No more secrets." - Jaha Washington S1E7 23:15 : Clarke was only posturing about morality and then did the exact same shit with minimal prodding?! 24:31 : There's something to be said for the Grounder (and actor!) sinking deeper into comfort and resolve, as the situation escalates to meet his expectations. It's like the more savage they come at him, the easier it is to deal with the situation. Octavia continues to farm points by remaining against this and actively trying to stop it. 26:30 : Yuhuh, how DO we know that's everything? IRL, my government is the /most well-documented liar in all of Human history/. That is, they have admitted to lies or have been caught in lies, on the record, the most times. They have killed their own citizens both covertly (poison) and overtly (ICE). They rob them. They have codified their pillaging into law. To trust them would objectively be stupider than trusting a rando because at least the rando doesn't have a massive history of lying. Whatever Jaha says next better be damn good. 27:28 : Not to take anything away from the loss of a child, but this is ABSOLUTELY not the same as the guy he's talking to. In fact, Jaha killed both of them. The culled also volunteered for the position, in order to give their loved ones a little time. Jaha should have been one of them. The husband probably should have been, too. It's a little crazy to let your wife do that alone. 28:17 : Alright, I take it back. They had a kid. He's in the clear. 29:24 : Bellamy looks legitimately more scared than ever of these guys. I love it. 30:50 : You're gonna call me a double-standards hypocrite, but Raven gets all the points for this. 1) It's effective. He hasn't seen that before and he's finally responding. 2) She has made no moral claims prior to this moment. 3) She's swinging for the fences, for what she cares about. 33:55 : Wells ain't the only one that let her believe it was him. 35:14 : Getting me all choked up. Normalize this kind of adult parenting in shows. 36:40 : TruthTeller on the rise! 37:18 : I'm sure nothing bad will happen as a result of this affection. 38:00 : As far as the dirty sweatshirt gang goes, I'm a big fan of Octavia's outfit in this scene, lol
I'm excited by a lot of the moral questions that are raised in this one. Can we torture folks? Should you beat yourself up for acting on what you believed was true at the time? How do we go about executing a prisoner, in the least offensive manner possible? If there aren't enough lifeboats, who gets them? The most valuable or most vulnerable? I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say the writers will find convenient non-answers to each of these. However, having a great time on this rewatch!
